The aim of investing part of the profit from Hepavax B was improvement of science and technology base and ultimately betterment of public health and social welfare of Korea.

For the past twenty years, MBRI has devoted its expertise in the field of biopharmaceuticals to address unmet medical need. Recent progress in the field of biological science and the completion of human genome project provides us an opportunity to achieve our goal with innovative and collaborative manner. Meanwhile, we are profoundly aware of the myriad challenges facing us for the bright future. We, at MBRI are ready to confront the challenges and will continue to be at the forefront towards a disease-free world.

■ Director's Message

MBRIs primary goal is to understand and utilize the biological principles of life in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases. We believe that this goal can be achieved through innovative research programs that investigate both biological systems and medical phenomena that can be translated into therapeutic products designed to improve human health.

MBRI is the first private non-for-profit research foundation in Korea approved by the Government. Our chief director Dr. Young Sup Huh and Green Cross Corp., one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Korea and well known for Hepavax B - the worlds biggest selling hepatitis B vaccine, donated funds to found MBRI in 1984. Their aim was to invest part of the profit from the success of Hepavax B for the benefit of Korean society, by contributing to the improvement of the nations science and technology base and ultimately to the betterment of human health.

The dedicated research undertaken by MBRI during the past two decades has resulted in the development of numerous commercial products such as vaccines against hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and chicken pox, recombinant hepatitis B vaccine, interferon, granulocyte colony stimulating factor, and diagnostic reagents for the hepatitis B, C and human immunodeficiency virus, etc. With our accumulated technology, knowledge, and experience, we have now produced over 120 registered patents and generated over 150 scientific publications both nationally and internationally.

MBRI will continue to dedicate its resources to the search for agents that will assist in both the diagnosis and cures of a variety of human diseases with an ongoing commitment to remaining a science-based and application-oriented research institute. We also believe that global collaboration is an essential element in this process. We therefore invite you to explore our website where you will find a comprehensive overview of our Institute, including our goals and ongoing research programs, and explore the opportunity to collaborate with us in the future and help us make a contribution towards a disease-free society. We will always welcome your continued interest and support for our work.
